Any reason why some people choose to use aluminium for the bonnet on their cars rather than GRP?

I'm not absolutely sure but i think that ally bonnets can work out lighter than GRP ones, except for the extra-lightweight 'racing' editions of the bodywork which a few people use.
My ally bonnet is about 4.5kg. It's seen better days and seems to change shape every time i take it off and put it back on again.
If i got a new one i'd go for GRP.
